Call for speed humps follows tot’s (3) death

KwaMakhuthu residents want speed humps erected on Gugu Mkhize Circle after a three-year-old girl was knocked over and killed last month.

Anele Shange was knocked over on Wednesday, 14 August at KwaMakhutha’s 17th section after returning from her neighbour, Themba Mkhize’s house. She later died in hospital. “It happened at about 2.30pm when a speeding car, driven by an alleged unlicensed driver, hit her,” said Themba. “There were lots of schoolchildren on the road on their way home, but they managed to run when they saw the speeding car approaching.”
The KZN police media centre confirmed a case of culpable homicide was opened at KwaMakhutha police station after a child was knocked over and killed on 14 August.
“Speed humps were requested from the council since 1999, but nothing has happened,” said Themba. “The drivers still speed on that road and we urgently need speed humps before another tragic accident occurs. We even signed a petition and presented it to the South Coast council and approached the ward councillor.”
Anele’s mother, Yvonne said they have heard nothing further from KwaMakhutha police. “It has been very difficult for us,” she said. “I’m traumatised and I can’t cope. Nothing has happened about putting speed humps on this road and nobody has bothered to get back to us.”
Repeated attempts to contact ward 94 councillor, Sipho Dlamini failed.
