Sympathy sparks feverish reaction to deserted dog’s plight

For the last fortnight, animal lovers have rallied on social networks around the cause of a dumped dog.

IT never ceases to amaze, how from one day or week to the next, the same issue may crop up, and then suddenly one particular incident that isn’t necessarily much different to the next, will spark an immediate response that galvanises people into a flurry of action.
For the last fortnight, animal lovers have rallied on social networks around the cause of a dumped dog, a fat little Jack Russell male, who was seen being ‘dropped off’ in the midst of a sugarcane plantation by an Indian man in a silver SUV. Toti folk have, for the better part of two weeks, gathered around and desperately tried to bait the dog, so that it could be assessed, fed and re-homed.
That the tough little furball was rescued more than two weeks later, after being exposed to a vulnerable existence among ‘wildlife’ that it could not have imagined existed, speaks volumes of the gritty determination of his rescuers.
There have been threats to out the callous dumper who put the once-beloved pet out in the wild rather than simply dropping him off at the SPCA or similar animal welfare or re-homing organisation.
It’s heartening to know that in South Africa’s gloom-and-doom drenched society, there are still people who have the mettle to ensure that seemingly petty social injustices are resolved and put right.
A lesson that the person who dumped the dog would do well to learn.
