Athlone Park Clinic puts the focus on health and safety

Informative talks on abuse, crime, health and safety were held, affording those in attendance a better understanding of services available to them.

ATHLONE Park Clinic held its annual Open Day on September 26 to educate the community about its healthcare services and ways to stay safe.

The clinic’s nursing service manager, Feziwe Msiya, said the aim of the day was to reach out to young and old to promote the clinic’s services and ensure everyone in the community has access to free, basic healthcare.

“Some of our services include family planning, men’s and women’s health, HIV/Aids screening and treatment, blood pressure tests, vaccinations and acute care,” she said.

At the Athlone Park Clinic Open Day are Merlene Matthew (chairperson, Amanzimtoti CPF), Feziwe Msiya (nursing service manager) and Lindi Dube (senior area manager, eThekwini Health Unit).

Various stakeholders came on board to make the day fun and insightful and to urge the community to make their health and safety a priority.

Some of these included the KZN Department of Health, Aids Healthcare Foundation, SAPS, Amanzimtoti Community Police Forum, Umbogintwini Primary School, Amanzimtoti Child and Family Welfare Society and Old Mutual.

Amanzimtoti Child and Family Welfare Society’s social worker, Thobekile Zulu, spoke about the services they offer, the role of a social worker and the importance of reporting abuse.

The clinic’s nursing sister, Tholiwe Tshabalala, of the Adolescent and Youth Friendly Services unit, spoke about the services for those aged 10 to 24.

The Amanzimtoti Police Station’s Constable Nkululeko Gwala, of the social crime-prevention and gender-based violence (GBV) unit, let the attendees know about the services offered at the station’s GBV desk. The police also handed out pamphlets on the rights of older persons, crime reporting and personal safety tips.

There were plenty of other informative talks and traditional isiZulu dancing by learners from Kusakusa Primary School, as well as snacks and juice courtesy of Umbogintwini Primary School.
