Interprovincial youth rugby tournament kicks off in Amanzimtoti

The interprovincial youth rugby tournament got off to an exhilarating start with players giving it their all on the field.

THE much-anticipated youth rugby interprovincial tournament (IPT) kicked off at Kuswag Skool on September 23, featuring intense matches among top teams.

After the national anthem and war cries by U13 to U18 KZN Duikers (Club Sharks), Blue Bulls, Lions and Valke teams, players made their way to the field to take on the best of the best in the four regions.

Field A played host to the highly-contested U13 Duikers vs Golden Lions match which ended with the Lions winning 17 – 14.

KZN Duikers’ U13 rugby player, Kia Bester, sprints away from his opponent.

Manager for the Duikers’ side, Jean Marais, said it was an exciting game with his boys dominating the game in the first half, leading 14 – 0. “The boys played extremely well, with lots of structure in their game. Unfortunately, towards the latter part of the second half, we let the game slip leading to a narrow loss. However, I am extremely proud of them. They’re all motivated and dedicated, and ready for the rest of the tournament,” he said.

The Amanzimtoti Youth Rugby Club is well-represented, with 36 players and three coaches selected for this year’s IPT, which ends on September 28.
