Mongooses hunted: SPCA seizes 28 dogs
The Amanzimtoti SPCA immediately acted on information of a group of people illegally hunting wildlife in the Umbogintwini area and caught them in the act.
AN illegal hunting operation in Umbogintwini led to the seizure of 28 dogs and the arrest of two individuals on September 15.
When Amanzimtoti SPCA was made aware of the hunting, inspector Luke Keyser, together with SAPS and security parties, went straight to the site.

The SPCA’s manager, Tracey Girling, said 28 dogs were seized and two people were arrested. “A case of cruelty will be opened under the Animal Protection Act No 71 of 1962. The SPCA movement is against hunting and will fight to stop this barbaric form of cruelty,” she said.
About 14 mongooses, which had been hunted and killed, were also recovered.
Girling said that a post-mortem was conducted on September 17 to document the injuries sustained during the chase and attack by the dogs. “This examination will provide crucial evidence for the case,” she said.
The dogs were immediately placed in the care of the SPCA and underwent a thorough health check by Dr Calista Chetty and her assistant. “Any animal needing medical care will be covered by the SPCA,” added Girling.
