Employees collect tons of litter during beach clean-up

Toyota employees and contractors collected 400 bags of litter, totalling about 2 700kg, from the Umbogintwini River-mouth area.

IN a display of environmental commitment, Toyota South Africa Motors recently carried out its second annual beach clean-up at the Umbogintwini River-mouth.

The event, in partnership with Clean Surf Project (CSP), was held in celebration of International Coastal Clean-up Day and the arrival of spring.

This effort not only advances Toyota’s corporate social responsibility goals but also aligns with Challenge 6 of Toyota’s 2050 Environmental Challenge, which aims to foster a future in harmony with nature.

The day mobilised enthusiastic Toyota employees and contractors, who worked tirelessly to remove over 400 bags of trash, totalling about 2 700kg. The collected waste included plastic bottles, clothing, shoes, toys and animal carcasses.

Denzil van der Westhuizen of CSP expressed gratitude for Toyota’s support.

“Our organisation focuses on a 16km stretch of coastline from Umbogintwini Beach to Illovo Beach. We aim to build a more environmentally conscious society that seeks a cleaner, healthier ocean environment. Collaborations like this are crucial, not only for cleaning the beach and river mouth but also for educating participants about the ocean, proper waste disposal, recycling and solutions to plastic pollution. It was a beautiful morning with great weather and a highly motivated crew,” he said.

The collected and separated plastic bottle caps will be donated to Umkomaas Primary School’s environmental club for their initiative to provide a wheelchair to someone in need.
