Public relations officer Kerry Kyle said the champs are a fun way for the Cuda, Wahoo, Dolphin and Masters squads to have some healthy competition among themselves while maintaining their fitness and teamwork.

“Being the first day of spring, there was definitely lots of excitement in the air. The teams were enthusiastic to kick off the first inter-squad champs; the weather was gorgeous, albeit a bit on the windy side. There was a bit of a strong sea current, but our teams didn’t let that get in their way of having a successful competition. Wahoo won the event, beating the Masters’ Coelacanths Squad by one point,” she said.

Competitive events are an important part of the lifesaving community, and days like these help the teams know that they are still on track.

Kyle said, “Teams come together and compete in four events: a surf swim, board race, beach sprint and taplin relay. It is also a wonderful way for our young Nippers to be involved in the competitive side. They are inspired by the incredible fitness feats that their fellow club members and coaches can accomplish.”

Athletes from the Cuda, Wahoo and Dolphin squads, aged 14 to 30, participate in beach patrols every Sunday, while the Masters Squad consist of members between 30 and 75 years old.
