Rhythmic gymnasts wow judges at provincial competition

Seven of the 58 gymnasts who competed at provincials were awarded gold medals, and 19 qualified for the South African Gym Games.

NINETEEN gymnasts from Fusion Rhythmic Gymnastics Club showcased their talent at the KZN provincial competition on August 17 and 18, qualifying for the upcoming South African Gym Games.

Rhythmic gymnastics is a captivating sport that blends gymnastics, dance and calisthenics. The individual and group routines incorporate various apparatus, including hoops, balls, ribbons, ropes and clubs.

Competing in levels 4 to 7, the girls impressed the judges and spectators with their grace and precision. Seven of them secured first place in their respective groups, earning themselves well-deserved gold medals. In total, there were 58 girls from the club who competed at provincials, however, levels 1 to 3 do not get selected for nationals.

Jess Odendaal, the coach and club leader, who also served as a judge during the competition, said it was a busy two days.

“The girls did exceptionally well, including those in the lower levels who took home numerous podium positions and medals. It’s amazing to see the progress made by new and experienced gymnasts. Some made the KZN team for the first time, and I’m sure they went to sleep with medals around their necks and smiles on their faces,” she said.

As the girls now prepare for nationals in Cape Town this month, their training will focus intensely on refining the elements and executing their routines.
