Relief for Umgababa disaster victims

A heavy storm hit the area only months after floods had left many residents homeless.

ETHEKWINI Municipality and the Department of Social Development were in Umgababa to hand over the Social Relief of Distress to flood and tornado victims on July 7.

The 2022 floods affected several households in Ward 98, and the recent tornado worsened the situation.

eThekwini deputy mayor Zandile Myeni, the chairperson of the community services committee, Zama Sokhabase, and the Ward 98 councillor, Arthur Mgobhozi, were part of the outreach. Myeni said that, as a caring municipality, the people’s well-being is what the City aims for since many have been affected by natural disasters each year. The relief consisted of food parcels.

“It is unfortunate that our people had to go through that but we want to show that we are with you and care,” said Myeni.

Mgobhozi encouraged residents to report service delivery issues, including the need for disaster-relief assistance. He said that 10 water tanks have been supplied to the community to address water challenges in the area. Five boreholes will be built in the ward to augment the water supply. Two boreholes have been completed and will be commissioned, while the other three are almost complete.

“We are working with stakeholders to provide the necessary assistance to affected residents,” said Mgobhozi.

He said that there are plans to bring the Department of Home Affairs truck to the area to assist with lost identity documents, birth certificates and other important documents.
