#Elections2024: Umgababa teen cherishes the right to vote

Gen Z voters have the future of the country in their hands. Lungelo Gumede is one of thousands of young voters who will make their voice heard in the upcoming elections.

LUNGELO Gumede (19), who will be voting for the first time in the upcoming General Elections on May 29, said he looks forward to choosing who governs him.

“Growing up, I didn’t see the need or the importance of voting, but now I realise that I need to make my voice heard,” said Gumede.

Gumede is from Umgababa and is a first-year student at the Durban University of Technology. He added that voting will give him a right to criticise the government if it is not doing well.

“By not voting, you forfeit your right to criticise the government. You can’t just sit and not vote but have the audacity to complain about how the government is performing. Before 1994, the majority of South Africans were denied the right to vote, and they fought for it. Now, it’s the other way around –  people have to be begged to vote,” he said.

Every single vote, said Lungelo, counts. When he queues at Magcino Primary School on Election Day, he will be among other Generation Z voters who will determine the course the country will take over the next four years.
