Isipingo police arrest man, recover unlicensed firearm

The perpetrator fired several shots in the vicinity of the taxi rank in the Isipingo Rail area.

ISIPINGO Police Station’s crime prevention members removed another illegal firearm off the street after a man was arrested for firing several shots.

The members were patrolling on Jadwatt Street in Isipingo Rails at about 18:00 on February 23, when they heard several gunshots fired behind the Amanzimtoti section of the taxi rank.

The Isipingo Police Station’s communications officer, Constable Donald Naidoo, said members immediately proceeded towards the direction of the gunshots and noticed a man trying to hide his firearm inside his pants.

“When questioned, the man said he was robbed and the suspects ran into the taxi rank, which is why he discharged his firearm. Members asked for the licence of the firearm used, but he had no documentation on him. They then inspected his firearm and found that the serial number had been removed,” he said.

The suspect was then arrested and charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm (count 1) and possession of unlicensed ammunition (count 2).

Acting station commander Colonel Nqubeko Arthwell Zulu welcomed the arrest and recovery.

“Removing illegal firearms from our streets has a positive impact and decreases dangerous and violent crime. It saves lives. It is very important to know that if you are found with an unlicensed or illegal firearm and ammunition, this is a very serious crime, and you will receive a harsh sentence by our courts,” he said.
