Interruption of refuse collection services due to strike

FOLLOWING municipal strike action today, February 28, eThekwini Municipality requests that residents not take out their refuse until further notice.

According to a statement, there has been a temporary disruption of waste collection services due to an unauthorised strike action.

This has affected cleansing and solid waste refuse collection and street sweeping services.

“We request residents not to take out their refuse until further notice. Those who have taken their refuse out are requested to retrieve it and keep it on their properties,” it read.

The statement further apologised for the inconvenience caused. “The City is working to speedily resolve the matter,” it read.

This afternoon, ward 97 councillor and DA member of eThekwini executive committee, André Beetge, said the municipal workers’ strike was causing upset across the city. “A group of about 300 protestors, predominantly from the Durban Solid Waste department, have caused havoc outside the Durban City Hall. “Refuse bins have been thrown over, and litter strewn across the street,” he said.

Beetge added that the strike extended to other areas of Durban during the course of the day.

As reported by PT Alarms, heaps of sand and rubbish that was dumped on the N2 north, in the vicinity of the old Durban airport, had caused major traffic delays.
