Trish Saville who produces most of the banners with other church members said banner-making runs the risk of being made obsolete by factory-made digital substitutes. For the past 30 years, she has been creating the artwork and teaching and passing the skill to other women at the church.

“Here in Amanzimtoti, there is still a place for this dedicated art. These banners are not just pretty pictures, they are there to send a gospel message,” said Trish.

Different banners with different themes are made and displayed depending on the season, including Easter and Christmas. They are displayed and changed throughout the church year. Before designing and making, Trish said time is spent researching the scriptures and seeking guidance through prayer to make the right impact.

Reverend André du Plooy leads the Amanzimtoti Methodist Church which holds three services every Sunday, as well as the children’s church. Trish said the current project is to produce a variety of relevant banners for display in the children’s church.
