Amanzimtoti Veterans Team resumes cricket season with a win

The opposition team got off to a rough start, and in the end, Amanzimtoti Cricket Club's veterans won by 10 wickets.

AMANZIMTOTI Cricket Club’s Veterans Team resumed the season with a win against Topham Cricket Club in the KZN Castle Veterans League on January 13 at the Toti Oval.

The club’s scribe, Peter Lonie, said after winning the toss, Toti skipper Marc Shepard elected to make first use of the pitch and asked Topham to bat first.

“His decision was immediately rewarded with both Topham openers being dismissed for a single – with a wicket each for Leon van der Westhuizen and Hendrik Nienaber. Topham recovered from their poor start to get to 40 before another two quick wickets slowed their momentum,” he said.

Shepard and Van der Westhuizen accounted for the middle order before Bennie Benadie was introduced into the attack and took 3 wickets in his 4 overs. Lonie said Van der Westhuizen picked up the final wicket in the 29th over, leaving Topham 111 all out.

“Set a target of 112 runs to win in 30 overs, the hosts made easy work in the chase as Toti openers Shepard and Johan van Niekerk knocked off the runs required in just 14 overs with both men reaching their half-century in the process,” he said.

Amanzimtoti Cricket Club’s veterans won by 10 wickets.

Leon van der Westhuizen scored 3/16, Bennie Benadie 3/21, Marc Shepard 3/22, Johan Van Niekerk 55* and Marc Shepard 50*.

Sunday’s matches were called off due to waterlogged outfields.
