Motocross rider defends championship title

This year, Luke Grundy will compete in the MX 2 division.

LUKE Grundy (17) of Amanzimtoti has successfully defended his title by winning the 2023 SA National Motocross Championship in the MX High School division.

Despite facing a setback with a broken wrist during a recreational ride on the day of the prizegiving in Johannesburg last month, Luke showcased exceptional talent throughout the eight rounds of the competition.

“I won all four races in the sixth and seventh rounds, scoring the maximum points and securing the title for the second year. It felt good to win. What made it even better was winning the championship early. The competition was similar to the previous year, except this time, my biggest competitor, who was putting pressure on me, was forced to retire after sustaining an injury. This allowed me to lead with ease and have fun,” said Luke.

Some of his other achievements throughout the year included taking part in the Bridgestone MX British Nationals and earning his KZN Senior Colours.

This year, Luke is looking forward to moving up a class to the MX 2 division.

“I’m excited. It’ll be my first year in a new class, so I’ll be taking it easy to get a feel for the racing and competitors before going in for the win. The intensity is much higher, so I’m going to have to put in a lot more training on the track and in the gym to ensure my fitness levels are where they need to be,” he said.

Luke has renewed his contract with Red Bull KTM South Africa and expressed gratitude to his team, coaches, sponsors, managers, mechanics, family and KTM South Africa.

He is currently on a break as competitive racing is done for the year. However, he will soon be back to training in preparation for the MX Nationals on February 24.
