Vehicle theft on the rise in Amanzimtoti

According to the Amanzimtoti Police, attempted theft of and theft out of motor vehicles have shown a tremendous increase in the area.

WITH the rise of theft of vehicles and out of vehicles, Amanzimtoti police would like to urge and sensitise motorists to safeguard their vehicles and property.

Amanzimtoti Police Station’s communication officer, Captain Charlene van der Spuy, said theft, attempted theft and theft out of motor vehicles have shown a tremendous increase in and around the area.

“Furthermore, investigations have revealed that although there is no specific make of vehicles that are being targeted, the Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger, H100, Kia 2700, Etios and Hyundai have become the most sought after. The days and times of these crimes vary, and they occur around shopping malls and areas which are frequented by holidaymakers,” she said.

Van der Spuy said motorists are therefore urged to work together with the police through structures such as the Community Police Forum (CPF), security companies, armed response units, Community Crime Prevention Organisation (CCPO) and neighbourhood watch groups to bring down the level of these crimes.

She also provided the following safety tips as part of preventative measures:

• Install an anti-theft device or system as an extra deterrent measure.
• Activate alarms and physically check that the doors are locked before leaving the vehicle. This will close the window of opportunity for car jammers.
• Where possible, try to park near entrances of shopping malls and security cameras.
• Report any suspicious behaviour to the security management of these malls.
• Park where there is a constant flow of traffic and pedestrians.
• Avoid leaving any electronic devices, handbags and sports equipment inside unattended vehicles.
• Discuss extra measures with your security company to ensure security gates cannot be derailed and locks broken to gain entry.
