Man arrested for identity fraud in Illovo

The man is suspected to be behind a series of robberies in Amanzimtoti and Illovo.

IN Illovo township, a 38-year-old man was recently arrested for being in possession of several fake identity documents as well as an illegal firearm and ammunition.

Metro Police spokesperson Colonel Boysie Zungu said the man is suspected of being behind a string of armed robberies in Amanzimtoti and Lovu.

“The suspect was apprehended in Phase 2, eMasosheni, but he tried to flee from the officers. His attempt proved unsuccessful, and he was captured,” said Zungu.

Zungu attributed the arrest to investigators working together from the Amanzimtoti SAPS and Metro Police.

“This arrest was a demonstration that the municipality is committed to curbing crime in the city,” he said.

In another incident, a man was arrested in Amanzimtoti recently after information regarding a house burglary in progress was relayed via the Community Crime Prevention Organisation’s (CCPO) radio network. Members of CCPO, ET Rapid Response, the Amanzimtoti SAPS Crime Prevention Unit, and security partners immediately responded to the mentioned address. The premises were surrounded, and access was gained, which led to the apprehension of one suspect caught red-handed inside. The suspect was processed and charged accordingly at Amanzimtoti SAPS.

On September 25, CCPO guards patrolling Stella Road in St Winifreds noticed a known house burglar walking with some tools in his possession. George Snodey of the CCPO said that as the guards approached the man, he dropped the items and fled, evading the guards.
