Clover Mama Afrika consists of a group of carefully selected women who act as pillars of strength in their communities. The countrywide book drive, which takes throughout this month, is a project to upskill ‘mamas’ throughout the country so they are able to take care of themselves, their centres and those in their care.

Public relations officer Simóne Ferguson said that 24 mamas in eight provinces are participating. “We hope to collect educational and reading books in any language for the children in their centres,” she said.

One of the mamas is Feziwe Gambo from Ezimbokodweni, just outside of Amanzimtoti. She supports 245 children, ranging from age two to six, at her centre, House-Kids Educare Centre. Gambo started the centre in 2010 when she was part of a church community project and saw far too many young children who were left unattended. She also runs various outreach programmes.
