Amanzimtoti SPCA reaches record adoptions

Seeing people open their hearts and homes to animals in need makes the SPCA's fight worthwhile and gives staff the motivation to keep trying.

THE staff at Amanzimtoti SPCA are ecstatic about the record adoption of 15 animals in one week, with a total of 24 adoptions for the month of August.

The SPCA’s Michelle Hannan said that as far back as the staff can remember, there have never been as many adoptions in one week. ā€œWe feel there are a mixture of factors that played a part in this. Stacey Wall, our volunteer and committee member, does a wonderful job placing our animals on social media. People are becoming more aware of the benefits and rewards of adopting. They now see we get a range of amazing animals in for adoption, beautiful both inside and outside,” she said.

She added, “They also realise that by adopting through reputable organisations, they are getting healthy and friendly pets that are well-socialised and adaptable. It is also cost-effective as animals are vaccinated and sterilised before going home. We also insist on micro-chipping our animals.ā€

Hannan said this record gives them a reason to keep fighting for these animals, as well as motivation to keep trying. ā€œIt’s so important to adopt as these animals are all worthy of finding good homes. Adopting, instead of buying from breeders, also helps cut down the market and put a halt to backyard breeding,ā€ she said.

Hannan added that they are so grateful to all those who came through and chose to adopt. ā€œWe are so happy to see our animals go to good homes where they will be loved and appreciated. It makes our fight worthwhile,ā€ she said.

One family that opened their heart and home to an animal in need is the Arnolds. Jenny said her new fur baby, now called ChloƩ, brings them so much joy.

ā€œI knew from the moment I saw her that she’d be the perfect fit for us and our two dogs. This is the fourth dog we’ve adopted from Toti SPCA. There are far too many abandoned and neglected animals out there, and I’d love to see that change. One of the ways is to adopt and not encourage breeding,ā€ she said.

Jenny added that she is a great supporter of the work the SPCA does and helps out whenever she can.
