Making a difference in her community

Thandeka Duma is able to feed more hungry children, deliver food hampers and build her own business through her partnership with The Domino Foundation.

THANDEKA Duma, a community worker and entrepreneur, is always on the lookout for opportunities that can help her make a difference in her community.

Two years ago, in partnership with The Domino Foundation’s nutrition programme in the south basin area, she was able to increase the number of hungry Illovu Township schoolchildren she feeds each day to 150.

The programme also affords Duma the opportunity to channel food hampers to 50 ‘gogos’ caring for abandoned and orphaned children, as well as to destitute families. In addition, she runs her own take-away venture, Good Shandis ‘Vibes’ Kitchen, which offers home-cooked meals.

Recently, the businesswoman with a heart for her community, signed up for a Business-in-a-Box workshop by Domino Business. The training workshop equips budding entrepreneurs with essential skill sets and the importance of sound business practice.

Duma said, “I want to run a business as best I can, and now I know so much more about marketing, cost and selling prices as well as how to build loyalty to my brand.”

Now that she has kicked off her beauty business, she regularly replenishes her stock of body wash and lotion from the Domino base in Amanzimtoti, run by Cheryl Dann, and then packs her products in eye-catching bags.

Dann said Duma is an extraordinary woman of many talents.

“But it’s her enthusiasm and determination to succeed which stands out most. One of Domino’s focal points is empowerment, and it gives us such a sense of fulfillment to see people like her taking creative ideas, applying them and then reaping the rewards,” she said.
