Sharon-Ann’s legacy lives on through Pensioners’ Friend

Sharon-Ann Theron always said her legacy will live on through her passion project, the Pensioners' Friend monthly booklet.

SHARON-ANN Theron died peacefully on Friday, May 12, after a long stay in hospital. She was well-known in the community for her free monthly booklet compiled and printed for seniors.

Her husband, Errol, said she is now pain-free and in God’s hands. “I am broken, shocked and distressed at her sudden passing and will have to accept that life will never be the same again,” he said.

Errol, who is battling terminal cancer, said he did not expect her to go before him. “She had been through a lot in hospital and rehabilitation over the last eight weeks, and she was very weak,” he said.

In March, the former Amanzimtoti pensioners and co-founders were proud to release their milestone 50th issue of the KZN booklet, which Sharon-Ann lovingly described as their legacy project.

Their purpose has always been to help other pensioners find specific information about facilities and benefits available to them. Especially for those without easy access to the internet.

Due to health reasons, the couple were forced to leave Amanzimtoti in 2021 after 13 years. They returned to their roots and family in Johannesburg where they then started a Gauteng version of the booklet.

Sharon is survived by her husband, Errol, her children, Vaughn Charles Spykerman, Bridgette Belinda Baker and Rosslyn Elizabeth Millar and their grandchildren.

Sharon-Ann was born at home in Primrose on April 18, 1953.

Her memorial will be held on Monday, May 22, at 11:00 at Alberton Methodist Church, 17 Heidelberg Avenue, Newmarket, Alberton.
