Sewing her way to success

Clover Mama Afrika's Feziwe Gambo learns how to sew in order to uplift and upskill members of the community.

COMMUNITY worker Feziwe Gambo has been hard at work refining her skills and learning to sew in order to serve and upskill members of the community.

Gambo is part of the Clover Mama Afrika project, which is a group of carefully selected women who act as pillars of strength in their communities. These women are always ready for a challenge and to learn something new that might not always seem easy.

On arrival at the first sewing course of the year, the project’s nine Mama Afrika sewers each received a pack with 5m of tracksuit material. Although Gambo was not present on the day, she was able to do her sewing from her House-Kids Centre in Ezimbokodweni.

Once the patterns were approved by the teacher, Linda Venter, from Johannesburg, the cutting and stitching started. Venter had her hands full to keep the group sewing, each at their own pace, and to keep them motivated.

The group was eager to learn, and everyone passed with flying colours. Following the course, they knew the basics of sewing and how to use their sewing machine and overlocker.

They were then ready to make their own garment. Gambo sewed herself a black dress which she proudly modelled.

Clover manager of Clover Mama Afrika Trust Elain Vlok said, “These sewers managed to surprise me with their lovely sewing, and I know they’ll be able to sew for many people in their communities. I am so proud of them.”

Gambo started her centre in 2010 when she was part of a church community project and saw far too many children under the age of four who were left unattended. She now cares for 357 children between the age of three months and seven years old at the centre. Her outreach programme also includes caring for 30 elderly members.
