Environmentalists picket at South Coast beaches

On the South Coast, the protests were held at the Amanzimtoti, Umgababa, and Umkomaas beaches. The SDCEA’s Janeira Reddy said many corporations such as Shell, Sasol, ENI and Total Energies are flocking to the South African coastline to explore oil and gas with the aim of extracting these minerals in future without any regard for the damage they leave behind.

“The impact of these explorations is immense and affects not only the marine life but the fisherfolk, surfers, swimmers, traditional healers and all ocean lovers and users who rely on the ocean for their livelihoods,” said Janeira.

She added that fossil fuels have a bad impact on global weather systems and the exploration leads to fishkill.
