The animal rights association, Uncaged, created International Animal Rights Day in 1998. It was their goal to highlight all forms of violence against animals.

Founders of the day stated that since animals cannot vote, protest, or lobby for their own protection, humans have to do it for them. The SPCA, which stands for society of prevention of cruelty to animals, does just that.

Amanzimtoti SPCA’s Michelle Hannan said, “As a SPCA, our primary function is to monitor and ensure the ethical treatment of all animals. We rely on the public to assist us in this by notifying us of any cruelty and welfare related issues and/ or neglect by phoning us on 031 904 2424, and lodging a complaint. You will remain anonymous and our inspectors will investigate the case and get back to you with feedback. Our first responsibility is to try and educate the public, but if that is not adhered to we can then proceed with legal action.”

Their inspector is well-versed with all animal laws to investigate, and also to adhere to the five freedoms of animal welfare, which are: freedom from hunger and thirst, discomfort, pain, injury or diseases, freedom to express normal behaviour and freedom from fear and distress.

If you feel an animal is being mistreated, abused or neglected, phone the Toti SPCA during office hours, Monday to Friday from 08:30 to 16:00, Saturdays from 08:30 to 12 noon. They are closed on Sundays and public holidays.

Hannan said, “Some cruelty complaints will need video footage or photographic evidence to pursue. Please be careful in doing this as we do not want any harm to come to your family or you. As well as this, we also monitor pet shops, slaughter houses and attend religious festivals to monitor the treatment of all animals.”

To find out more about the work they do or what animal cruelty is, phone them or email reception@spcatoti.co.za.
