Operation to fix Ward 97 carried out

The multi-disciplinary task team will work in the ward until November 5.

A BLITZ operation to fix faults in the infrastructure, and check for and enforce compliance with eThekwini Municipality’s bylaws and the country’s laws, was undertaken by officials from various departments in Doonside on November 1.

The multi-disciplinary task team set to conduct Operation Good Hope is made up of officials from different eThekwini departments, SAPS, the Department of Home Affairs, Customs, the Liquor Board, the Department of Community Safety and Liaison, community policing forums and other stakeholders.

Ward 97 councillor and executive council member, André Beetge, said the operation comes after he spent some time compiling a list of faults that need to be ratified in the ward. A team from the Electricity Department is fixing streetlights on the main arterial roads, and other teams checked water connections and fixed faults, while others conducted a cleaning blitz. Several wastewater pump stations have been repaired and will be recommissioned.
Several businesses on Main Road were visited to check for compliance with trading regulations.

“Contrary to what has been said, we did not target certain businesses. We were not out looking for soft targets. What the team found were that some of the shops had a lot of expired goods that were being openly sold,” said Beetge.

Cigarettes and other items that had been smuggled into the country were also found. Another business was found to be selling self-bottled liquor. He said goods that did not enter the country through customs are detrimental to the economy as no tax is paid for them.

All expired and illegal goods were seized. Operation Good Hope runs until November 5.
