National baseball tournament held in Toti
The last time KZN hosted, and at the Amanzimtoti Sports Centre, was in 2014.
THE Masters National Baseball championship saw various action-packed games played from October 12 to 15, at the Amanzimtoti Sports Centre.
This annual tournament, hosted by KZN Masters Baseball Association, sees each province given a turn to host.

“The purpose is to give masters a chance to compete on an interprovincial platform. KZN last hosted in 2014 at Toti,” said the head of the local organising committee, Craig Dempsey.
This is also the first event since 2019, due to Covid-19. “It was great to see baseball back at Toti and for KZN to host masters after nothing for three years,” he said.
The tournament takes on a round-robin format. The Elite Masters division O35s played triple round robins, and the Challenge Masters O45s and Vets O50s both played single round robins. All finals were two and a half hours or seven frames, whichever occurred first.
At the finals, KZN Elites placed first after beating Mandela Bay. The KZN Challenge team placed last in their division, and the KZN Vets lost to Cape Town Baseball Federation, putting them in second place.
“The KZN elites were unbeaten throughout the tournament, and many of their players were rewarded by making the select team. KZN Vets also had much success but lost in the final, and the best player was Dale Coetzee,” said KZN Masters Baseball Association’s chairperson Dion Desaunois.
All teams are taking a well-deserved break after a long week of baseball. The selected team from the Elite teams are now considered the masters of the national side.
