Beach re-opening welcomed with a splash

The public has been asked to swim only at designated beaches for their safety.

THE Britz family came out to enjoy the sun at Doonside Beach on Wednesday, September 14, only days after the eThekwini Municipality announced that certain beaches have re-opened for public use. This was after tests indicated that E. coli levels were within acceptable standards at the now-open beaches.

Barely 300m away from where the Britz family was swimming on the other side of the Little Amanzimtoti River lagoon, Baggies Beach remained closed for swimming as tests indicated that E. coli levels were still high there.

The beaches across the South Coast were closed in August after massive contamination was caused by sewage outflows due to damaged pump stations. Swimming and other water activities are now allowed on the following beaches: Amanzimtoti Main Beach, Pipeline Beach, Doonside Beach, Warner Beach, Winklespruit Beach, and Umgababa Beach. Along with Baggies Beach, Reunion Beach also remains closed.

“Beachgoers are urged to avoid water-related activities at beaches that are closed. The public will be notified when the closed beaches are re-opened and safe for public use,” read eThekwini’s statement.

It further said the municipality remains committed to public safety at its beaches, and to transparency, and remains guided by results from its laboratory and will react in line with those results.
