Winkle Surf Lifesaving Club postpones open day

Despite all the planning and preparation, the event had to be postponed due to the closure of beaches in Durban.

WINKLESPRUIT Surf Lifesaving Club has had to postpone their open day scheduled for September 4, due to high levels of E. coli and resultant beach closures.

“Despite the planning and preparation by the committee to hold the annual open day and welcome-back-to-the-beach event, we have had to postpone proceedings owing to the beaches being closed due to the unacceptably high levels of E. coli at present,” said the club’s president, Neville Hazell.

He said the annual open day is usually well supported by the community as it gives the public the chance to experience first-hand how the voluntary lifesaving movement works.

Children from ages six to 14 can enrol in the micro nippers and the nipper programme where they are taught basic skills that will enable them to become fully fledged lifeguards from 14 years upwards.

The day is also used to attract members to join as trainee lifeguards where they are taken through the steps of the Junior Lifeguard Award and at age 16 upwards, the Lifeguard Award.

“Regardless of the postponement of the event, anyone interested in getting involved in the sport is welcome to visit the club on any Sunday from 08:00 to 16:30 and meet the duty squad and club captain, Stefan Viljoen, who will be only too happy to assist,” said Hazell.

He added that the event will be held when the club has clearance from the relevant authorities.
