‘Joyriding’ car crashes into flat in Amanzimtoti

Sonny Naidoo's neighbours reported that they heard sounds of a car racing up and down the road at high speed just before impact.

AN Amanzimtoti pensioner is still in shock after a car crashed into his flat in the early hours of Monday, July 25, while he was in bed.

Sonny Naidoo, who lives on the ground floor, said he heard a loud crashing sound at around 01:30 and got up to investigate.

“The first thing I noticed when I stepped into the living room were the curtains being blown by the wind and that seemed odd. I then quickly realised that the window had been shattered and there was a bakkie that was reversing back into the road,” said Naidoo.

In a video that was taken by a neighbour, the bakkie can be seen leaving the scene after crashing through the precast wall and into the block of flats. Naidoo said he had woken up just after midnight to go to the bathroom, and when he returned to bed he tossed and turned for a while. The accident happened just as he started to doze off.

The Community Crime Prevention Community Amanzimtoti (CCPO) officers quickly responded to the scene and were able to trace the bakkie to another well-known block of flats on the same street. The damage done includes shattered windows in the kitchen and in the living room, cracks on the wall, and damaged furniture.

When the SUN arrived at the scene a few hours later that morning, a man, who did not provide his name, but said he works with the alleged driver of the bakkie, was also there. He said the driver is in his 20s and had taken the company car for a joyride while he was asleep. Naidoo said neighbours, who stay on floors above his, have told him that before impact, they could hear sounds of a car driving up and down that stretch of road at high speed.

The matter was reported to Amanzimtoti SAPS and an investigation is ongoing.
