Seal found on Winkle Beach

Seals are often exhausted when they reach our shores and need time to rest peacefully before returning to the sea.

ON Saturday, May 28, residents of Amanzimtoti took to Facebook to share the sighting of a seal on Winkle Beach, and to ask for assistance to get it safely back into the water.

Amanzimtoti SPCA manager, Tracey Girling, took to Facebook to respond by saying, “The seal is fine, SPCA and NSPCA are on site with Jace Govender (Amanzimtoti beach manager).”

According to the South African Association for Marine Biological Research (Saambr) Sub-antarctic fur seals, South African fur seals and Southern elephant seals periodically wash up on KwaZulu-Natal beaches, sometimes thousands of kilometres from their home range. These seals are often exhausted when they reach our shores and need time to rest peacefully before returning to the sea.
