Amanzimtoti SAPS spokesperson, Captain Charlene van der Spuy, said handgun firearm competency certificates are valid for five years, while certificates for all other firearms, including rifles, self-loading rifles, shotguns, and carbines, are valid for 10 years.

“This only applies if you are still in possession of that specifically licensed firearm. If not in possession of one of those firearms, the competency certificate remains valid for only five years,” said van der Spuy.

All competency certificates need to be handed in three months before the expiry date.

“Applicants who have received their first notice that their firearm license application has been approved, will receive a second notice to inform them that the card/ certificate is ready for collection,” said van der Spuy.

Applicants who have not received notifications for collection of licenses dating to January 2021 are urged to come to the office to enquire/ collect. Enquiries can be made at Amanzimtoti SAPS, Room 1, from Monday to Wednesday between 07:00 and 14:00, or by calling 031 913 1303.
