Thieves target Umkomaas hospice again

Khanya Hospice appeals for donations after a recent theft.

THIEVES struck again at Khanya Hospice offices in Umkomaas on Tuesday, February 8, making away with the electric gate’s motor.

Only a few months ago, all copper water pipes were stolen, leaving water gushing everywhere. Windows have been broken a number of times by would-be burglars but the sound of the alarm always scares them away.

ā€œWe are fuming. This is really a financial blow to us as insurance only covers things inside the offices,ā€ said Neil McDonald, CEO of Khanya. ā€œThe electric gate motor was not only ripped out, but even the cement around it was messed up. The two bricks that were lying there were obviously used to hammer and break even the metal casing where the motor was screwed on. The white piece of conduit sticking out with the electric wire where it was cut off is still visible,ā€ he said.

A case of theft was opened with Umkomaas SAPS.
