[WATCH] – Local canoeist wins gold at world championships

The Toti canoeist claimed gold at the International Canoe Federation (ICF) World Championships in Lanzarote.

[WATCH] TOTI canoeist Michelle Burn (35) did the country proud after winning gold at the International Canoe Federation (ICF) World Championships in Lanzarote at the Canary Islands in Spain on Sunday, July 4.

The South African team she was part of almost did not make it because of Covid-19 restrictions. “We weren’t sure if we were going to be able to get here for this ICF race. Coming from South Africa there was a lot of red tape, but we really fought hard and we managed to get a few of us here,” said Michelle.

I took a slightly different line to the other girls, I went quite shallow, which I think paid off at the end.

Toti Canoe Club chairman Stan Whiting said they were pleased by Michelle’s achievement. Michelle has twice taken silver at the 2013 and 2017 world championships.
