Organisation empowers through arts

The organisation also deals with different programmes including career guidance.

NGUWE Wedwa Youth Development is extending its reach and empowers people of all ages to strive for their goals and dreams.  While the organisation usually deals with the youth in the community, founder and CEO, Mbongeleni Mzimela, hopes to empower retired individuals as well.  Recently retired, Moses Msomi, 57, was inspired to become an actor and started working on plays through different organisations. He hopes to inspire other men to focus on their talent rather than being involved in social ills.

“If men in the community put more effort in bettering themselves and working towards goals I believe that social ills will be reduced. We need to work together to end gender-based violence and other serious issues plaguing our communities. People of all ages should use their god-given talents to make an impact and become better individuals in society. It is never too late to reach for your dreams,” said the aspiring actor.

Mbongeleni recently organised the Artists Entrepreneurial Workshop to continue empowering the youth who are in the entertainment industry. His passion and commitment to this cause drives him to make a difference and positively impact the lives of the emerging talented artists.

“Our footprint covers Umthwalume, Umlazi, Umkomaas, Umgababa, Lovu Township, Magabheni and Inkwali. These areas form part of the greater Durban Metro and Ugu districts. Umgababa has a population of about 400 000 people where the programme was implemented. This community has issues that affect the youth such as drugs, high alcohol consumption, sexual assault, teenage pregnancy and the high rate of young people affected and living with HIV/Aids. We want to see change, we want the youth to be active, open-minded and indulge themselves in initiatives like ours, so that we see positive outcomes in the community,” said Mbobgeleni.

The organisation also deals with different programmes including career guidance.
