Ivan takes the reigns at Winklespruit Bowling Club’s men’s singles championship

The game itself was very close in the early stages.

THERE was another full house for the Victory Kwik Spar Tops men’s trips tournament recently played at Winklespruit Bowling Club (WBC).

A competitive morning of bowls was played and all the bowlers thoroughly enjoyed the game. Thanks to the competition secretary for the hard work in putting this together and to the sponsors, Victory Kwik Spar Tops for its continuing support. Thanks to the kitchen and bar staff for catering to the players needs.

Overall winners were George Glaves, Cleve Hein and Phil Witton. Second session winners were Mike Kruger, Barry Hilton and Alan Baxter and the 100 board was won by André Gelderblom.

The current club champion, Ivan van den Bergh, took on Freddy Hetterscheidt in the first round of the men’s club singles championship and his display in this game showed that he has no intention of giving up his title. The game itself was very close in the early stages with Freddy keeping in touch and he actually took the lead at one stage.

But, Ivan just stepped up a gear and produced some wonderful drawing shots to take the game away from Freddy who, no matter what, just had no answer to the champions display.

John Scott came up against Basil Ananladis in the first round of the men’s club singles championship which was a repeat of last seasons semi final, but this year the tide turned and it was John’s turn to progress to the next round. He now faces a seasoned George Cormack in the next round.

Both Winklespruit men’s teams won their games in the Port Natal league last weekend. The fourth division side had a narrow win in the end and it was good to see so many spectators watching the game. Play starts at 1pm every Saturday, see the notice board for fixture lists and dates.

The men’s 2-4-2 Clearwater Spur pairs takes place on Thursday, 22 April, registration at 8.30am for 9am.

Social bowls every Wednesday and Friday, tabs in at 2pm for 2.30pm.

The club hosts a social evening on Friday night, 30 April. There will be a two course meal followed by a game of bingo. Put your name on the list on the board. Contact Tracey Scott for more information.
