Big plans for Sapphire Coast Tourism
The Hoot Bridge mural is nearly complete and will feature artwork showcasing aloes, waves, birds, forests and vervet monkeys.
Sapphire Coast Tourism has been busy implementing and developing initiatives around the area.
Plans surrounding a viewpoint at the R102 and Golf Course Road Intersection in Athlone Park are underway. The aim is to develop a viewpoint for visitors to enjoy the magnificent view of the Amanzimtoti Country Club, conservancy, Indian Ocean and the industrial area.
“At this stage, the area will be equipped with a photo frame as well as an information map board, marking the start of the Sapphire Region which stretches from Athlone Park in the North to Clansthal in the South. Many thanks to Tedd Holden who was kind enough to give committee members an informative tour showcasing the conservancy’s work within the Amanzimtoti Country Club,” said the local tourism organisation’s Romy Wenzel.

“The silhouette of the Schooner Tonga that wrecked in 1875 which resulted in the seaside town being named Winklespruit will also be featured. On May 10, 1875, the Schooner Tonga, which was carrying wares for Durban was wrecked here. The sailors not wanting the cargo to go to waste set up a store on the river bank and sold the water-damaged goods. The store was known by the Afrikaans as Winkel (shop). Special thanks to Johnny White, Vusi Michael Zondi and eThekwini Municipality Parks for assisting with the trimming and removal of branches.”
