Excellent performances displayed at figure skating competition

Youngsters are encouraged to take up the sport.

Figure skaters from across the country were eager to display their skills at the KwaZulu-Natal Inter-Provincial Competition at the Galleria Ice Rink.  The event was a resounding success and saw 34 participants showcase incredible performances.

“This has been an extremely tough season for our athletes. They were off the ice due to Covid-19 for almost eights months. Being an athlete entails a great deal of training both on and off the ice and this has been a challenge.  I was extremely proud of our athletes for the programmes they produced with very limited training on the ice. Their perseverance and determination showed through every aspect of their programmes,” said chairperson of the KZN Figure Skating Association, Barbara de Kock.

She said that it was amazing to be back on the ice.

We host this event every year, however, being back after 12 months was a great feeling. Galleria Mall and Tri Ice were incredible.  The assistance we received from both parties was top class, nothing was too much of a problem and they went out of their way to ensure the success of this competition.  As a non-profit organisation, our budgets are always tight, however, they ensured the success of this competition, working with us to help where possible. We thank them.”

Youngsters are encouraged to take up the sport.

“Skating is such a beautiful sport and we make a lot of friends. I think especially the girls like to go out there and have their pretty dresses and dress up like little princesses and go out there and perform for the audience.  In any sport you have got to believe you can do it and you will do it,” said national coach, Heather Ashley.
