Amanzimototi house fire destroys precious memories

THE charred remains of sentimental items filled rooms where laughter and happiness once roamed freely. Tanya van Rensburg is still reeling from shock after her family home, situated on Kingsway Road, was engulfed in flames during the early hours of Friday, 2 April. The cause of the fire is being investigated by an insurance company.
The home was bequeathed to her by her parents and grandparents and contained memories passed down through the generations.
“I grew up in the house and I am absolutely shattered. My brother saw a post about the fire on social media and contacted me. My great grandmother’s piano, jewellery, furniture and other sentimental items were all the house. This fire has really hit me hard and I am struggling to come to terms with it.”

“People in the area knew the house and my family. My grandfather, who owned the house, was a woodwork teacher at a local high school and was well-known. My family and I are broken and we appeal for any assistance. I’m still trying to get to Amanzimtoti to pick up the pieces and clean up where possible. I initially planned to stay at the house during my visit. There’s no place to go to, so I appeal to the public to assist my family and two dogs just for a night or two. I will appreciate any assistance. I found a couple of 8mm videotapes with my parents on them. They have all passed away and I appeal to anyone with an 8mm video camera to lend it to me so I can get to see our old home movies.”
