Clean Surf honoured for its dedication

In celebration of National Water Week, Clean Surf Project (CSP) received the prestigious Caroline Reid Award to honour its commitment and dedication to restore rivers as well as protecting waterways and the natural environment. CSP embarked on a clean-up of Umbogintwini Beach in celebration of Global Recycling Day, National Water Week and World Water Day. With the support from community members, the Wild Pack Team, Durban Bay Clean Up, Umkomaas Primary School and Durban South Toyota six bulk bags filled with recyclable waste were successfully removed from the river mouth. These bags were collected by SW Collectors.
“Sadly, plastic pollution remains a huge problem with litter being scattered along the coastline, buried underneath the sand and washed out to sea. While weekend clean-ups are privately funded by the non-profit organisation, any form of support and assistance will be highly appreciated to continue and expand the clean-up campaigns,” said the organisation’s Romy Wenzel.
She thanked all those who assisted during the clean-up.
“Thank you to everyone who joined and supported the clean-up. Thumbs up to Giselle Halse from Giselle’s Kitchen for her continued sponsorship of snacks and refreshments on completion of the clean-up.”

“This initiative is driven by Outdoor Environmental Education Africa (OEEA) with the attempt to revive educational school touring, an industry that has immensely suffered due to the pandemic. In the past, Clean Surf Project used to join OEEA’s tours by educating learners about marine plastic pollution at ATKV Natalia, Illovo Beach. Special thanks to Amanzimtoti Beach Rest Guest House for offering complimentary accommodation, allowing the crew to join the Umbogintwini Beach clean-up campaign.”
