Amanzimtoti girl wows at figure skating competition

Amanzimtoti’s Meagan Tara Tancrel, 17, bagged second place at the KwaZulu-Natal Inter-Provincials Figure Skating Competition recently.  The prestigious event was hosted by the KwaZulu-Natal Skating Association and was held at the Galleria Ice Rink.

Her performance displayed a mixer of poise and grace as she glided on the ice. 

“It was the first time I participated in a competition since the beginning of lockdown. I was happy and excited to compete. My performance on Saturday was good but it could have been better and on Sunday, I let my nerves get the better of me. I am very happy with the results though. I will compete in nationals in June and this was a great boost of confidence.”

She first stepped on the ice nine years ago and while she did not initially like the sport, she fell in love with it in no time.

“There was a lot of hard work that went into this competition. It was difficult training during the lockdown. We did online and off ice training for a while and we were only allowed back on the ice during level two lockdown.” 

The South African Figure Skating Association is a non-profit association and focuses on the promotion and development of the different disciplines in figure skating that includes free skating, ice dance, pairs skating and synchronized skating in the country.
