The suspects were detained and handed over to Umkomaas SAPS.

Two cable thieves were found trying to flee in a taxi travelling in Amanzimtoti on Friday, 19 March.

“At about 9am, information was circulated by a security company owner from Umkomaas stating that two men were in possession of stolen cable, and were headed for Durban in a taxi. Members of ET Rapid Response located the taxi on the N2 freeway in Amanzimtoti area, whereby the two men were found in the taxi, in possession of the stolen cable, wrapped in plastic,” said operations manager of ET Rapid Response, Louis van Ryneveld.

The suspects were detained and handed over to Umkomaas SAPS.

“A follow-up operation was conducted, which lead to the arrest of a third suspect, recovery of implements used in the commission of the offence, as well as identification of where the actual theft took place. Eskom officials were contacted and confirmed that the cable belongs to Eskom, and the estimated value of the recovered copper cable is about R80 000. Well done to all involved, excellent teamwork.”
