Specialised mattress to aid Hospice patients

Sr Sue is thankful for the specialised blow up mattress that is very useful in palliative nursing care and to bedridden patients.

SR Sue Van Rijsbergen, nursing manager of Khanya Hospice with CEO, Neil McDonald and Sr Mariane Visagie, were overwhelmed by a generous donation from Marius and John Matthews, in memory of their sister, Nora Wolhurter, who was under Hospice care and passed away last week.

“Sr Sue is thankful for the specialised blow up mattress that is very useful in palliative nursing care and to bedridden patients. The mattress gets connected to a motor and has a timer that lets air in and out, this motion helps with the prevention of bedsores,” said McDonald.

“Being a non-government funded organisation, we have to pay for whatever we need and use in patient care, like wound care dressings, (which are very expensive), painkillers, adult nappies and toiletries, etc,” said Sr Sue.

“Thank you to the Matthews brothers for this wonderful mattress. You truly blessed us.”

The donation will assist Hospice nursing staff help patients that cannot afford the luxury of a specialised mattress and those that are not on medical aid.
