Water disruptions have an enormous impact during pandemic [LETTER]

You need to make an effort to maintain our basic amenities so we can survive and continue to serve the community.

EDITOR – I write this letter with much frustration, and great concern. I live in Athlone Park and since October last year we have been having water cuts. Each time we have phoned the water board they come up with concerning excuses. First excuse, burst water pipes, can one have so much bad plumbing in one area? Second excuse, the reservoirs pressures are low due to distributing water to many areas. Third excuse, power problems at the water towers. When you built the new reservoir, did you not envision you would need to distribute water to so many areas and thus have a plan in place, to maintain upkeep of all electrical works ect. Since the new reservoir has been built it appears we are constantly having water cuts. Our greatest concern however, is no water during Covid-19 times. Could we not hold you in contempt, as hand washing is of greatest importance to stop the spread of this awful pandemic. I am a nurse and I see the reality of how many people in Amanzimtoti and surrounding areas are infected. I would like you to imagine, a nurse who has worked a 12-hour shift among this devastating virus, is unable to wash sufficiently to rid the virus, and then needs to go back to work for another 12-hour shift. It is not only me, it is all essential workers who are putting their own lives at risk, to come home and have no water. This is not good enough, we are in 2021. Technology has improved tenfold, the rates and taxes in this area would appear to be sufficient to manage and maintain our basic amenities. I feel that during this time you should make it a priority to fix the present problems. You need to have a plan, we have not seen one water truck since October last year. You need to inform the people who will be affected. You too need to make an effort to maintain our basic amenities so we can survive and continue to serve the community. I end this letter with the hope that whomever is in charge, will reply to this, honestly and with much integrity as we all would like to get through this alive.
