Pregnant mothers spoilt by Kingsburgh library staff

We wanted to show the women that they can connect with their unborn child.

Expectant mothers were treated to an informative morning by Kingsburgh library staff members at St Mary’s Church in Warner Beach on Thursday, 19 November. The 21 moms-to-be, who hail from Kingsburgh, Toti and Lovu Township, were presented with gift bags that contained a yoga mat, baby blanket, pencil case and a booklet with vital new-born information and exercises for them to do, that was made by library staff.

The main aim of the morning was to teach the pregnant women the benefits of reading to their unborn babies while they are still carrying them. Literacy on show included children and pregnancy books. “We wanted to show the women that they can connect with their unborn child while it is still inside them,” said Tozi Gumbi, the head librarian at Kingsburgh library.

Mom-to-be Buyisiwe Mtolo and senior librarian Nombuso Dube check out the literature on show.

The expectant mothers then had a chance to use the mats in their gift bags with a yoga session conducted by Ria Cock. “It is only advisable to do yoga while you are pregnant if you did it before you fell pregnant. So we just focussed on very basic exercises for the women to do, such as breathing, meditation, posture, relaxation and visualisation.”

She was assisted by Lydia Petre, who said it was important for the women to make their pelvis core muscles stronger to prepare for the birth of their babies.
