Missing manhole cover is a danger to Amanzimtoti residents

The cover is lying inside the manhole, which is on a sewer line.

A resident is at his wit’s end to get the municipality to replace a missing manhole cover. Kobus Grobler, who resides at Sandown flats at 330 Kingsway, said the manhole is situated on a neighbouring vacant plot. “It is so overgrown that we don’t know how long the cover has been missing for. We asked the municipality to trim the bushes that were growing into the road about two months ago and that revealed the manhole.”

The cover is lying inside the manhole, which is on a sewer line. People keep dumping their litter on the vacant lot and some of it has blown into the hole and blocked it. As a result, the level of sewage in the drain keeps rising.

“My wife reported it when we noticed it about two months ago. She got a reference number, but nothing was done about it. When she called the municipality about a month ago to inquire about it, she was told the fault had been sorted out, although it was not. They then gave her a second reference number.” Subsequent calls, as recent as Tuesday morning, 6 October, went unanswered.

“It just keeps getting worse. We even called Cllr Andre Beetge about it, but nothing is being done. It is so unsafe, not only for the residents who walk there, but for the public, especially at night. On the weekends, many people park their cars on the opposite side of the road and walk down to the beach past there to go fish.”
