Coach empowers the youth through cricket

Gift established the Highway Cricketers, which enabled a group of youngsters to form an official team. Since then the team has grown and gained exposure that led it to be part of the KZN Cricket Union through Ravi Padayachee and Pat Symcox.

Assistant coach, Gift Khuzwayo, 32, aims to empower the youth through cricket. He began coaching in 2013 and has not looked back since.

“Cricket is another simulation of life. Life, like cricket, has a set of rules and the challenge is to do well by using your resources in the most optimal way and be the best version of yourself. It is also a team sport that offers opportunities for children to be social, make friends and practice working within a team. The experience can improve a child’s social and leadership skills, including cooperation and communication, and can help them develop a shared love for the sport with other like-minded children. This can help them in school and their future careers.”

“We are now a part of a cricket hub structure. One of our players has been selected for provincial tournaments in 2018 and 2019, while others have participated in district tournaments. With practices not taking place, the children will be a bit off-track on their playing skills, but nothing a good training session cannot fix. My aim for next season is to scout more children to get involved in the sport and catch up with our practices, and perhaps have an opportunity to start an academy in the area.”
