Case opened after pub death

A CASE of culpable homicide has been opened following the death of Stephen Goldstone who died after falling from a bar stool at Home Plate.
Det W/O Rassie Erasmus said Goldstone was knocked unconscious when he hit the floor. Cause of death has been established as suffocation consistent with chocking as a result of restricted airways.
“We are investigating two local lifesavers for negligence in this regard,” said W/O Erasmus.

Bullies must be brought to book

IT has come to the notice of the police that several people have sustained serious injuries from being beaten up at local night-clubs.
The incidents are not reported as the victims are threatened with their lives, should assault charges be laid against the assailants. It is believed that in some instances the families have also been threatened.
“We cannot investigate crimes if they are not reported,” said a spokesman from Toti CID.

Mortgages granted for Lovu

THE Lovu low-cost housing development is one of several areas to have been accepted into the Mortgage Indemnity Scheme Fund.
The Minister of Local Government and Housing, Peter Miller, announced this following a meeting of the Mortgage Indemnity Fund Board last week. The approval of MIS cover to the area follows earlier board approval for other areas, including KwaMakhutha.
These areas sufficiently meet the criteria set by the National Minister of Housing and Provincial MECs for the sustainable resumption of home lending, enabling the MIF to approve the granting of cover to accredited lenders.

Geese come home to roost

THE Buis family of Toti is overjoyed following the return of two Egyptian geese to their garden, the same pair which disappeared when the male was shot with a crossbow last year.
Joy Buis contacted the SUN last week after the pair had been spotted three weeks ago in their garden. “The whole family and even the neighbours are excited,” said Joy. The geese first appeared in their garden last year in December. Soon after the family discovered the male goose with a crossbow through its thigh.

Jets will soar the skies

THE sky will be shattered by the exciting sound of jets for the next two weeks.
Lt Col JJ Geldenhuys of 142 squadron is once again heading the Deploy Radar Depot based at Crocworld. The squadron is participating in annual supersonic air combat manoevres. “We would like to warn residents that there may be a couple of loud bangs and noise from low and fast flying aircraft over the sea in the area,” said JJ.

Rescue staff are always ready to help

AMERICA might have 911, but Toti residents have the Fire and Rescue Southern Council to rush to their aid in times of emergency.
A dedicated team of 45 firemen work round-the-clock shifts extinguishing fires, rescuing members of the public from accidents and administering first aid. I recently spent a shift with the department and drove around in the emergency vehicle with station officer (SO) Brian Botha and fire fighter Robert Belstead.
