Mandela Month beautification begins

The project is going to take about 10 to 12 weeks (weather depending) with the basic prepping of walls having started and the first murals being painted.

The true spirit of community and the essence of Mandela month were highlighted when resident’s band together to provide some much need tender love and care to a long-forgotten area. Kicking off the month of July, local artist Christine Andrews beautified Amanzimtoti’s CBD with its taxi rank and kiosks with stunning murals.

Sapphire Coast Tourism, a community tourism organisation, is going to focus on brightening up the area in and around the taxi rank with the mural themes, ‘nature – protect our environment’ and ‘go green – keep our Sapphire Coast clean’.   The project is going to take about 10 to 12 weeks (weather depending) with the basic prepping of walls having started and the first murals being painted.

Sapphire Coast Tourism’s Romy Wenzel said, “Many thanks to the Amanzimtoti Fire Brigade for the kind assistance to spray the walls in order for Christine Andrews and Clyde Stapleton to commence the painting. This project is proudly sponsored by Sapphire Coast Tourism with the aim to uplift the area, support informal traders, boost local tourism and of course encourage commuters to keep the area clean.”

Clean Surf Project, in collaboration with Sapphire Coast Tourism and Social Waste Management SA, will also conduct a clean-up at the taxi rank on Saturday, 18 July as part of their 67 minutes in celebration of Mandela Day.

“This initiative is in line with the Inkwazi Isu (African Fish Eagle Project) that was launched in March this year. This is an environmental project focusing on the area stretching from Umbogintwini River to Amanzimtoti River and Lagoon. During the clean-up all necessary precautionary measures will be followed in line with regulations,” she added.
