343 arrests made in Isipingo

This operation focused on the illegal sale of liquor and cigarettes.

Police officers from Isipingo SAPS have ensured that criminals are off the streets during lockdown and have secured 343 arrests since the beginning of May. A team led by Colonel Leon Matthysen secured several arrests and recoveries for the contravention of the disaster management act of lockdown level four. This operation focused on the illegal sale of liquor and cigarettes.

Communications officer of Isipingo SAPS, Captain David Ragavan said, “On Saturday, 9 May at 6pm two employees of a local liquor distributor were arrested for transporting, distributing and the sale of alcohol valued at R250 000. On Sunday, 10 May, a suspect was arrested at Orient Hill for contravening the regulations of the disaster management act for the sale of liquor valued at R5000 during the lockdown. Suspects were also arrested for the sale of liquor valued at R10 000 and for the possession of marijuana at Isipingo Beach on Friday, 15 May. Another suspect was arrested on Lotus Road for the sale of liquor valued at R20 000 on Saturday, 16 May.”

All of the suspects were released on bail and will appear in court soon.

“Isipingo SAPS will not tolerate the sale of illegal items during level four. We have also made numerous arrests in terms of the disaster management act. Those who were arrested included people moving around without permits, taxis drivers failing to comply with lockdown regulations such as overloading passengers, not using sanitisers and transporting people without permits. We will continue to ensure that residents adhere to lockdown regulations,” added Captain Ragavan.
