Seed of Hope stands strong against the virus

SOH has partnered with local stakeholders who have already set up food banks.

Amid all the challenges brought on by Covid-19, the Seed Of Hope (SOH) organisation continues to serve Bhekulwandle under the leadership of their new CEO, Londiwe Myeza. “This is done through various initiatives. After receiving an overwhelming number of food requests from community members, we realised that the community was getting desperate for food and we decided to respond in various ways,” she said.

SOH has partnered with local stakeholders who have already set up food banks. “We provided them with the names of people who are in need. Due to an increased number of people asking, we knew our partners’ support would not be enough and we had to find other ways to raise funds.

We reached out to the larger community by inviting people to partner with us to feed the families and we have been using our social media platforms to raise awareness about our fundraising initiative. In one day, we raised R5 000, which was able to benefit 20 families.”

The food parcels included oil, sugar beans, maize meal, rice, salt, soup packets, tea bags, facial masks, an information leaflet and vegetable seeds. “The seeds are to encourage the community to grow their own vegetable gardens. The facial masks were made by our sewing programme head, Ernestina Hlophe.”

SOH has also launched a WhatsApp number (031-903-1125) to allow beneficaries and community members easy access to the centre.

“This is a tough season to navigate and we recognise the emotional impact it has had on people. One of our service offerings is pastoral care, which is led by our founder, Heather Liebenberg. She has been extending pastoral care internally and externally by strengthening our staff through sharing the word of God, and has recently launched a blog which is available on our website www.theseedofhope.org.”
